Director, Cardiologist

Luke Dutton

BVSc MRes MVetMed PhD MRCVS DipACVIM (Cardiology)

Luke developed a strong interest in veterinary cardiology and research during his undergraduate degree and graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2015. He spent a year in a mixed first opinion practice on the south coast of England, where he honed his clinical skills and deepened his commitment to patient care. Luke then moved to the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) to embark on a Master of Research degree, which was awarded in 2017. His research focused on cardiac stem cell biology, further fuelling his passion for advancing the field of veterinary cardiology.

Following his Master’s, Luke stayed at the RVC to complete his PhD, where he modelled feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy using induced pluripotent stem cells. This cutting-edge research underscored his dedication to finding innovative solutions for cardiac conditions in animals. He then returned to full-time clinical work as a cardiology intern at the Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital, University of Cambridge. After 6 months of internship, Luke returned to the RVC to embark on an 3-year American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine residency in veterinary cardiology, to become a board-certified specialist in veterinary cardiology.

Throughout his career, Luke has remained passionate about cardiology as a field, driven by a desire to improve the lives of animals through expert cardiac care. He is committed to delivering compassionate and comprehensive patient care, ensuring that each animal receives the best possible treatment. Luke values clear and empathetic communication with clients; helping pet owners understand their pets’ conditions and treatment options. Additionally, he is dedicated to supporting first opinion vets by providing on site specialised cardiology services and advice, fostering a collaborative approach to veterinary care.

Outside of work, Luke enjoys going to the gym, gardening, walking/hiking, and has recently started a new hobby of beekeeping. These activities provide a well-rounded balance to his professional life and reflect his appreciation for both physical health and nature.

Cardiology nurse

Francesca Ryan

BSc (Hons) RVN

Francesca is one of our cardiology registered veterinary nurses. She assists the cardiologists, carries out procedures such as blood pressure measurements, ECGs and blood samples, as well as having a key role in client education and communication.

Francesca qualified in 2015 from the Royal Veterinary College and topped up her foundation degree to a Bachelor of Science degree in veterinary nursing in 2016. After getting her degree she went travelling around the world for a few months, even spending time in a monkey rehabilitation centre in South Africa! Upon returning she worked as a locum for different practices and eventually returned to the small animal practice where she had previously completed her training. While there she became a clinical coach and took a keen interest in training student nurses and went on to become the ‘Training Practice Principal’.

When Francesca’s two pets; a sassy Pomeranian called Echo and a soppy cat named Rambo, were both diagnosed with heart conditions her passion for cardiology was ignited. She has thoroughly enjoyed learning about their respective conditions and how to manage them. This is something she hopes to be able to share with fellow owners and feels this unique insight will help reassure them.

In her free time, she enjoys walking Echo, along with her two family dogs, Alfie and Chester, both Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (one who also has a heart condition), enjoying nice food or supporting her husband as a para table tennis athlete.
